A Shadow Work Journal
Space to uncover the gold God placed in you long before you knew to look for it.
The psychiatrist Carl Jung noticed something curious about the human heart. He described the shadow as everything we push out of sight: our anger, our envy, our fear, the parts of our story we would rather not own.
Jung warned that the shadow does not disappear when ignored. He wrote that "everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is." Left in the dark, it quietly shapes our reactions, our projections onto other people, and our harshest judgements.
"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious."
But Jung saw something more. We do not only hide our difficult parts. We also hide our gold: our gifts, our confidence, our calling. Scholars have come to call this the golden shadow, the brilliance we carry but rarely show.
We believe this gold was placed in you on purpose, by a Father who knit you together with intention. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, His handiwork, created for good works prepared in advance for you. This work is not about becoming someone new. It is about uncovering who you already are.
How to use this journal. Set your timer below, put the playlist on, and move through the tabs in your own time. Scriptures is for slow reading and writing. The Shadow goes into the hidden places. The Gold brings what you find into the light. When you are done, Keep It will print or save everything you have written.
Press play, draw a prompt, set your time. Then write without stopping until the time runs out. No editing, no crossing out. Shadow work happens in the sentences you did not plan to write.
Twenty four prompts, shuffled. Draw one, set the timer above, and write without stopping until the time runs out. Shadow work happens in the sentences you did not plan to write.
Press "Draw a prompt" and something will find you.
Six verses to sit inside. Read each one slowly, twice. Notice the word that catches. Then write until you have nothing polished left to say, only what is true.
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."Ephesians 2:10
Handiwork is not an accident. It is something made with attention, by hands that chose every detail on purpose. Your gifts were not an afterthought, and neither were the parts of you that still feel unfinished.
Where have you been living as though you were an accident rather than a work of art? What would change today if you believed the good works were already prepared, and simply waiting for you to walk into them?"Be still, and know that I am God."Psalm 46:10
Stillness is where the shadow surfaces, which is exactly why we fill our days so full. What we avoid in the quiet is often the very thing God is waiting to meet us in.
What comes up in you when everything goes quiet? Name it honestly, without rushing to fix it. What might God be wanting to say underneath the noise you keep reaching for?"You are fearfully and wonderfully made."Psalm 139:14
The whole of Psalm 139 holds both truths at once: God searches us and knows us completely, and God calls the result wonderful. Being fully seen and being fully loved are not in competition.
Which part of yourself do you struggle to call wonderfully made? Write to God about it plainly. Then write what you imagine He would say back to you about that very part."For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."2 Timothy 1:7
Fear often disguises itself as humility. We call it modesty when we shrink, but Paul names the shrinking for what it is, and offers something else in its place: power, love, and a mind that is settled.
Where has fear been wearing the costume of humility in your life? What would you begin, ask for, or say out loud this month if you were operating from power, love and a sound mind instead?"He has made everything beautiful in its time."Ecclesiastes 3:11
In its time. Not in the time you wanted, or the time everyone else seemed to get. Some of your gold was buried in seasons that felt wasted, and it was not wasted at all.
Which season of your life still feels like lost time? Look again, slowly. What was formed in you there that you could not have gained any other way?"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."Romans 15:13
Overflow is what happens when something is filled past its own capacity. This is not hope you manufacture by trying harder. It is hope poured in, until it spills onto the people around you.
Who in your life is thirsty for the very thing God has been filling you with? Write their name. Then write what you would like to overflow into their life this year.Three exercises for the parts we would rather not look at. Go gently. Nothing you find here is news to God, and nothing you find here changes how He feels about you.
Arriving honestly. What thoughts have been running through your mind lately, the ones you rarely say aloud? Write them out without editing yourself. What are you hoping to leave behind, and what are you hoping to receive? Finish with this sentence: "God, I have come here because..."
"Be still, and know that I am God."Psalm 46:10
The reaction that surprises you. Think of a recent moment when your anger, envy or defensiveness felt bigger than the situation. Jung taught that our strongest reactions to other people are often projections, pointing to something unowned in ourselves. What might that reaction be protecting? Sit with it gently. Even that darkness is not dark to God.
The judgement you keep making. What trait do you find hardest to forgive in other people? Gently ask: where does this trait live in me, perhaps in disguise? Confession is not self-condemnation. It is walking into the light where mercy is already waiting.
Four exercises for the brilliance you have been hiding. The gold was placed in you on purpose.
The gift you were told to hide. Think of a time someone told you to "tone it down" or "not show off." What gift were you using in that moment? List three strengths people often comment on in you. Which of these do you tend to downplay?
"You are fearfully and wonderfully made."Psalm 139:14
On purpose, for a purpose. If you fully believed God had placed this gold in you on purpose, what would you do differently this year? What quality do you deeply admire in someone else that might actually be waiting in you?
Your calling, plainly. Write one sentence describing your calling, as plainly as you can. Don't worry about getting it perfect. Who in your life needs to hear this from you, and what has stopped you from telling them? Write a short, honest prayer asking God for courage to step forward without apologising.
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."2 Timothy 1:7
Building from here. Reading back over what you have written, what is the one truth you most want to remember in six months' time? Name one small, doable step you will take in the next two weeks to bring your gold into the open. Then write a blessing over yourself, the kind a good friend or a loving Father would speak over you.
"He has made everything beautiful in its time."Ecclesiastes 3:11
Everything you have written across every tab will be gathered into one document, with your answers set beneath each prompt. To save a PDF, choose "Save as PDF" as your printer in the print window.
